The Technique
Transcendental Meditation is uniquely effective
Transcendental Meditation is the most simple, natural and effective of all meditation techniques. It dissolves stress and tension, improves health and energy, and increases the conscious capacity of the mind, leading to increased creativity, intelligence, and learning ability.
Transcendental Meditation described by its founder
Transcendental Meditation is a simple, natural programme for the mind, a spontaneous, effortless march of the mind to its own unbounded essence. Through Transcendental Meditation, the mind unfolds its potential for unlimited awareness, transcendental awareness, Unity Consciousness — a lively field of all potential, where every possibility is naturally available to the conscious mind. The conscious mind becomes aware of its own unbounded dignity, its unbounded essence, its infinite potential. Transcendental Meditation provides a way for the conscious mind to fathom the whole range of its existence — active and silent, point and infinity. It is not a set of beliefs, a philosophy, a lifestyle, or a religion. It’s an experience, a mental technique one practices every day for fifteen or twenty minutes. – Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
How do I learn?
The first step to learning Transcendental Meditation is to attend a free introductory presentation. This takes just over one hour to complete. You can sign up to receive lecture schedules and locations using our Contact Page.
Where do I go to learn?
There are Transcendental Meditation centres and certified TM teachers located all over the world. To find a teacher in your city, get more information, or set up a meeting, call 011 728 0959 or email enquiries@tm.org.za For a list of TM Centres, click here.
How long does it take to learn? How is the course structured?
Transcendental Meditation is taught through an initial seven-step course. The first three of these steps give the necessary information prior to learning the technique. The last four are sessions of actual instruction in the technique itself and are always held on four consecutive days, involving about one-and-a-half hours each day. After that, there is an optional but highly recommended follow-up programme to ensure maximum benefits from the practice.
Follow-up and support
After learning Transcendental Meditation you are provided with follow up services including:
- Meditation check-ups, to ensure that the practice of the technique is going smoothly
- Group meditations, accompanied by further knowledge for deeper experience.
- Network of support by any of our registered teachers at any time, no matter where or how long ago you learned.
These services are entirely free for the first twelve months. Thereafter some Centres continue to offer the service free, while other Centres provide an optional membership scheme at a modest annual fee.
Is there a possibility that Transcendental Meditation won’t work for me?
Anyone can do Transcendental Meditation. There is no particular skill, discipline, belief, or attitude that’s needed in order to practise the technique successfully and get the full range of benefits. Even if you’ve had a hard day, or you’re travelling, or are in a noisy environment, the technique will still work perfectly well. Anyone who can think a thought can practise Transcendental Meditation. It really is that simple. This is why TM is so effective – wherever you are and regardless of the circumstances, it is a reliable means to gain a profound quality of rest, so that after meditation you engage in your activity with greater clarity, less stress, and more energy.
